![]() ![]() So what impact does destroying Hosnian have on our heroes? Nothing at all. This is a major turning point in the story (sometimes called the "midpoint" if you know anything about screenwriting or plot points.) So its destruction serves both the big picture in demonstrating the Empire's power, but also directly affects our heroes as their plan is suddenly turned upside down and they're pulled into the Death Star. As we know, Luke, Obi-Wan, and Han are heading to Alderaan, only to find that it's been blown up when they arrive. More importantly though, is the impact on the plot. Hosnian is actually a bigger deal, since the Republic was apparently just destroyed, but no one seems overly concerned. The more obvious one is just in the immediate reactions in the characters. The Death Star destroying Alderaan has a more significant impact than the Starkiller destroying the Hosnian system. But once they're actually fired, what happens? Why now? Could they not have used it before? It's never said. Snoke just says it's time to use the weapon. There is nothing like that for Starkiller base. There's also the scene where they debate whether they should use it or not ("this station is now the ultimate power in the universe"), indicating that it has only recently been completed. And so the only thing we even know about the new republic is that it's just been destroyed.Īs for the buildup, remember that we technically saw the Death Star in Episodes II and III, showing that it took a long time to actually get to the moment where it was operational. We essentially learn about the existence of the new republic and the weapon at the same time. The biggest problem with this scene is a lack of context and proper buildup. Their motivations though, are a little unclear, besides just the fact that they're against the Republic. ![]() In TFA, the Star Killer weapon is fired on the Hosnian system, which is where the new Republic is located. We now know what's at stake for the Rebels and why the plans are so important. This shows how evil the Empire really is, because they have no problem destroying Leia's entire home planet for basically no reason. In ANH, the Death Star of course is fired on Alderaan, in what is essentially a demonstration of what they can do. Now let's compare when both weapons are actually used. In short, it's not essential to the story. We could remove the Starkiller Base while still keeping the basic story with finding Luke at the center of it. We would have to rewrite the entire script from scratch. So why does this matter? Imagine if we wanted to take the Death Star out of ANH. We know about the Death Star from the very beginning, but Starkiller isn't introduced until well into the movie. Meanwhile, the main plot of TFA has nothing to do with Starkiller Base, but rather finding Luke Skywalker who has disappeared, and BB8 is given part of the map that leads to him (which doesn't make sense when you think about it, but that's for another post). Then the movie opens with the Empire chasing a Rebel ship with the stolen Death Star plans, which are then given to R2 which sets the whole plot in motion. The opening crawl even introduces it and the idea that it can destroy a planet. In other words, ANH is essentially about the Death Star, at least in terms of its general plot outline. The Death Star is at the center of A New Hope, but at best an afterthought in TFA. So let's break down the main reasons why: What's wrong with Starkiller base is the specifics in terms of its concept and implementation into the story, especially when compared to the Death Star in the OT. There is nothing inherently wrong with the idea of a new super weapon. However, the problem with Starkiller Base is not simply the fact that it's "just another Death Star" as it's often stated. ![]() One of the biggest criticisms of The Force Awakens has been about Starkiller Base. ||| Join our Discord! ||| Question?
